Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl will step away from his role at the club after over a decade at the helm, the club have announced.

The 48-year-old has held the position since 2008 after a period overseeing the club’s youth structure but has asked to stand down from duty with immediate effect.

Eberl made his decision known to the players and staff on Thursday night, having voiced his concerns about the club’s direction with the board before Christmas, according to Sport1.

“This is the most difficult press conference for me in all the time I’ve been here,” an emotional Eberl said on Friday afternoon. “I’m tired, exhausted and no longer have the strength to carry out the duties the club requires.

“After 23 years, I’m ending something that was my life but many things have happened which means my work is no longer happy. I have to draw a line and take care of my health.”
