Fresh favourite emerges for Manchester City defender

Manchester City left-back Sergio Gomez looks likely to depart this summer with little game time available for him at the Etihad. It had appeared as if he would be returning to his native Spain after spells in Germany and Belgium, but he could be on his way to Serie A instead.

Real Sociedad are looking to sign him this summer to replace the outgoing Kieran Tierney, whose loan has expired, and Gomez had been identified as their prime target. They had been looking at him for months, but are waiting on Mikel Merino’s future to be resolved before they commit to a deal. Merino is out of contract in 2025, but is being courted by Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. However Relevo say Roma are now favourites for Gomez’s signature, with nothing getting in the way of the Giallorossi moving for him.

The 23-year-old former La Masia player arrived two summers ago for €15m from Anderlecht, but has featured only 38 times since, and very few of those appearances have been more than cameo appearances. Gomez has plenty of pace and has shown potential as a reconverted left-back, but will need more of a chance to continue his development.
