Ouest-France report this afternoon that former French international goalkeeper Benoît Costil is on the verge of completing a free transfer to Serie A side Salernitana, where he will sign a one-year contract.
The 36-year-old was training this summer with Breton side Vannes, having left Lille at the end of last season. Costil had joined Les Dogues midway through the campaign after six months at Auxerre. He made 16 Ligue 1 appearances at the latter club, but did not feature in the second half of the season.
Previously, the Caen youth graduate spent six years at Rennes and then five at Bordeaux. He left Les Girondins at the end of the 2021/22 season, when the team finished bottom of the top flight after conceding 91 goals across the campaign.
The move to Campania will be Costil’s first time playing abroad. In Italy, he will notably cross paths again with Paulo Sousa, his former head coach at Bordeaux. He will also have two compatriots at the club – former Montpellier man Junior Samba in the playing squad, and former French international Franck Ribéry in the technical staff.
