Ex-Newcastle winger Callum Roberts has been handed a trial with Middlesborough in the Championship. He will appear in their U23 match against Stoke City this evening.

Roberts is a local lad who was born in South Shields, and was highly-rated at Newcastle as a youngster. He never developed as Newcastle had hoped and was released earlier this summer.

The twenty-two-year-old had a disappointing loan spell at League Two club Colchester in January. He ended up making only 3 substitute appearances before returning to Newcastle. Prior to that, he had been on loan to Gateshead in 2015 and Scottish club Kilmarnock in 2017.

Roberts only managed two appearances for the Newcastle first team. He was, however, able to score a goal in the FA Cup match at Blackburn this past January.

This is an opportunity for Callum to get his career on track. He had been linked with Greek club Panathinaikos earlier this year. Panathinaikos’s technical director is former Newcastle defender Nikos Dabizas.

He will hope to get a chance to impress former Magpie and current Middlesborough manager Jonathan Woodgate.
