Chelsea have many players come and go through the doors at Stamford Bridge, but some of them leaving longer lasting impressions more than others.
Juan Mata was absolutely a fan favourite at Chelsea, and there was not even any love loss when he left the club to join league rivals Manchester United.
The attacking midfielder was just a very lovable character and would always give it his all for the club.
Some players, such as John Terry, Frank Lampard, and Didier Drogba just to name a few, have gone down as forever club legends at Chelsea. Whilst others will be more cult heroes or fan favourites. I’d put John Obi Mikel within that latter bracket, and I think I’d put Mata there too just because he was so well liked at the club and fans still enjoy hearing what he is up to now.
And that brings me to this next story, what IS Mata up to now?
Well, he’s made a very interesting next career move after retiring from the game. But he is still staying within football, thankfully.
Good move for Mata
Mata has joined the ownership group of Major League Soccer franchise San Diego FC.
“Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth,” Mata told SDFC’s club website.
“The commitment of both this Club and Right to Dream to community impact, excellence, and a vision for long-term success aligns perfectly with my own values.
“I look forward to contributing my experience and passion for the game and working alongside everyone here to build a Club that inspires both on and off the pitch.”
We wish him the very best of luck in his new venture!
