Chelsea are closing in on a deal for 22-year-old Xavi Simons, who left PSG earlier this year, though Manchester City are also keeping tabs on the Dutch midfielder. PSG, meanwhile, stand to profit from the move regardless of his destination.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reported that RB Leipzig have accepted an €80 million offer for Simons, with €55 million payable upfront. Simons is contracted to Leipzig until June 2027, and PSG inserted a sell-on clause ensuring they earn a cut of any future transfer.

That strategy has already proven lucrative. Adam Crafton of The Athletic noted that PSG received €17 million (£15 million) from Hugo Ekitiké’s recent transfer to Liverpool thanks to a similar clause.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Simons has told the board he wants to leave the club, saying he doesn’t want to waste any more time.

His next stop is expected to be Chelsea. The London club has been pursuing him for weeks, and an agreement has already been reached between the player and the club. The hold-up is that Chelsea need to offload several players, including Alejandro Garnacho, before completing new signings.

Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schroder confirmed the situation is still unresolved. “The transfer market is still ongoing, we can’t guarantee anything 100 percent,” the manager stated.
