Kicker currently reports that Florian Wirtz’s serious ankle injury may regrettably be as serious as it gets. The Bayer Leverkusen phenom may be ruled out for the rest of the Bundesliga season on Monday. Kicker’s Leverkusen correspondent Stephan van Nocks counts as about as reliable a German footballing source as possible.

Van Nocks reports that an MRI on Saturday revealed a potential syndesmosis tear. A second opinion is now being sought. This constitutes the reason for the silence from the defending Bundesliga champions. In response to enquiries, Leverkusen have asked for patience and promised a definitive diagnosis on Monday. Wirtz is meeting with a specialist on Sunday.

Wirtz left the BayArena on crutches yesterday. As heinous as the official diagnosis may be for the ultra talented footballer, Wirtz has overcome much more serious injury adversity in his young career. An ACL tear sidelined the 21-year-old for 10 months between March 2022 and January 2023. The resilient young talent battled back to continue to flourish into arguably the best active German footballer in the world.
