Following their brush with the authorities during the week, Flamengo decided not to train this weekend.

Manager Jorge Jesus and his squad were caught working in large groups at Ninho do Urubu on Wednesday in contravention of the ban on such activities by the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella.

Gazeta Esportiva reports that health inspectors were also prevented from carrying out tests at the training facility.

As a result of these infractions, Flamengo were fined almost R$3,000 (€500).

Mayor Crivella was due to meet with Rio’s clubs on Sunday, as the parties sought to clear the air and reach an agreement to allow training to begin again on Monday.

“We are proposing, in the scientific council, a return strategy,” Crivella said.

“Clubs that can obey this, then from the 25th (end of decree) will be able to (return to training). The strategy is strict, it is very strict. On Sunday, I meet with the clubs.”

Brazil has been one of the countries worst affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
