Giorgian de Arrascaeta has paid tribute to his departing teammate Gerson, who is set to join Zenit after his contract with Flamengo was terminated on Friday. Zenit triggered the midfielder’s €25 million release clause, securing his exit with a single upfront payment, according to Lance.
Arrascaeta and Gerson spent years together at Flamengo, contributing to a number of major trophies and establishing a close on-field relationship. In a message posted to social media, Arrascaeta emphasized the professionalism and character Gerson brought to the squad. “Synonymous with character and professionalism. Our group knows how important you were to our achievements and how much you always put this team above everything,” Arrascaeta wrote. “You’ve earned my respect and truly are a great idol.”
Gerson, who wore the number 8 shirt, leaves after agreeing to a contract termination and presenting a unilateral request for departure. His exit comes just months after he signed a new deal with Flamengo in April 2025, which featured a reduced release clause meant to give flexibility should a suitable offer materialize. The club made clear it would only allow him to leave if the full release clause was paid, a condition met in full by Zenit.
In an official statement, Flamengo acknowledged Gerson’s contribution during his spell at the club, thanking him for his dedication and commitment. The note highlighted his role in the club’s recent successes and his status as an idol among the fans.
Gerson’s move to Russia closes a chapter in a Flamengo career marked by major titles and crucial performances, with the club now set to turn the page and reshape its midfield options. Arrascaeta’s words underline the high regard in which Gerson was held within the dressing room and serve as a public farewell from one leader to another during a time of change for the Rio de Janeiro side.
