The sporting director of RB Leipzig has spoken out this week on the future of his attacking midfielder Xavi Simons.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last month or so, you will be well aware of Chelsea’s attempts to sign Simons from Leipzig in this summer transfer window.

We haven’t had many fresh updates on this one in the last few days but Fabrizio Romano did ensure that Chelsea are still in talks to sign Simons but as he’s said all along, the club need to make some sales first as well.

One of those players needing to be sold is Christopher Nkunku, and despite some negativity on that one actually happening at all at the weekend, there was a report from Ben Jacobs suggesting that there was still optimism that this one gets done.

So you’d imagine that once Nkunku is sold or at least advancing to leave the club, then Chelsea can go ahead of get the Simons deal done if they can agree on a fee.

Xavi Simons playing for RB Leipzig.

All along it’s looked like Chelsea and Leipzig had been a little way off on the asking price so a fee for Simons has yet to be agreed. And judging by the comments below, it looks like Chelsea will have to pay up.

RB Leipzig sporting director, Marcel Schäfer has said on Xavi Simons:

“A transfer will only happen if it makes sporting and financial sense. If that’s not the case, Xavi will be an RB Leipzig player next year as well.”

Simons going down to the wire

I honestly think Chelsea will now have a busy transfer deadline day with a few of these big deals going down to the wire.

It could be entertaining, or it could be a disaster!
