Chelsea's transfer activity heats up as the squad battles on the field and in the market.
Chelsea's efforts to bolster their backline hit a hurdle as Inter Milan rebuffed a €50m bid for Alessandro Bastoni. With Levi Colwill sidelined due to an ACL injury, the hunt for a solid defender continues to be a priority. Bastoni's Champions League pedigree makes him a coveted target, but Inter's valuation exceeds Chelsea's initial offer. Meanwhile, in a potential exit, Nicolas Jackson has caught the eye of Aston Villa. With Chelsea open to selling, Villa may look to capitalise, although the Premier League summer window's end looms large.
Another exciting transfer narrative is Xavi Simons' preference for Stamford Bridge. Despite RB Leipzig's hefty demands, the Dutch starlet has set Chelsea as his preferred destination, a testament to the club’s lure over Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Leipzig's valuation of around €80m remains a stumbling block, but Chelsea hope to fund the move by offloading Christopher Nkunku, potentially to Bayern Munich.
Chelsea's defensive frailties were further exposed after a goalless draw against Crystal Palace. With Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana out, and Tosin Adarabioyo on the mend, Enzo Maresca finds himself relying on young prospects like Josh Acheampong. The teenager, thrust into action due to necessity, shone with a poised performance that belied his years, earning him plaudits despite the lack of goals from Chelsea’s attacking unit.
The Blues were unable to break down a stubborn Palace defence, despite dominating possession. Newcomer Estevao Willian was a bright spark, showcasing flair and creativity on his debut, suggesting he could be pivotal in unlocking defences going forward. Yet, the need for more clinical finishing remains a concern, highlighting a possible area for tactical refinement from Maresca as Chelsea aim to regain momentum for upcoming fixtures against West Ham and Fulham.
