FC Groningen want to re-sign AZ Alkmaar prospect on loan

FC Groningen are trying in vain to sign Dave Kwakman on loan from AZ again. However, according to Voetbal International’s Bart Kruijt, the message from Alkmaar is clear: the midfielder is not allowed to leave.

Kwakman spent the second half of last season on loan at FC Groningen. Even in this short spell, he proved to be a clear asset to Dick Lukkien’s team, despite primarily playing as a left winger, rather than in his preferred midfield role.

The 20-year-old brought FC Groningen great creativity, playing 15 Eredivisie matches and scoring two goals. Now, Lukkien is eager to have the midfielder back in his squad for the new season. FC Groningen have reportedly made serious efforts to do so, but AZ’s position is clear: Kwakman cannot be loaned out again.

AZ face stiff competition in midfield, but there appear to be opportunities for Kwakman. The Youth League winner is eager to seize that chance, as he revealed earlier this week to ESPN NL.

Meanwhile, AZ are working on an improved contract for the technician, who is currently contracted until the summer of 2028. There’s no real rush, but the Alkmaar club want to demonstrate that they see a bright future in Kwakman.
