Sheffield Wednesday have held positive talks with Danny Rohl, which EFL pundit Carlton Palmer has labelled as "fantastic news".

According to The Star, the Owls are confident of keeping the German coach going into the summer transfer window.

The 35-year-old had raised doubts over his future at Hillsborough ahead of the end of the season, indicating he was seeking assurances over the club’s long-term ambitions.

There has also been speculation linking him with the head coach vacancy at Sunderland.

However, it is now believed that he has been convinced to commit his future to remain with the Yorkshire outfit.

Palmer has claimed it is fantastic news if Rohl does indeed commit his future to Sheffield Wednesday.

He has warned that the club cannot afford to have the same upheaval behind the scenes that they had last year when Darren Moore departed during the summer.

“News is coming out of Sheffield Wednesday that Danny Rohl and the chairman of Sheffield Wednesday Dejphon Chansiri have held positive talks and the German coach is expected to remain in charge of Sheffield Wednesday,” Palmer told Football League World.

“This is fantastic news for the supporters.

“We can’t have the disruption that ended last season, with the euphoria of going up and Darren Moore effectively being sacked.

“We just can’t have a situation like that again going into a new season.

“It was in total disarray from getting promotion to euphoria to the debacle that happened.

“The chairman Mr. Chansiri has to have credit because he has appointed Danny Rohl and he has brought in his backroom staff, and they’ve managed to turn it round, which was absolutely outstanding.”

Palmer predicts promotion challenge

Palmer has predicted that the German can guide the club back to the Premier League within two years if he receives the proper backing from Owls’ hierarchy.

“People laughed at me last season when I said that Sheffield Wednesday could go on to do a back-to-back [promotion], well Ipswich have gone on to do a back-to-back with a lot of the players that played in League One, and I did feel that this was a distinct possibility,” he added.

“And if you look at the way Sheffield Wednesday have finished the season, six more wins and they would be in and around the play-offs with the total they have got now.

“So it won’t take a lot to change and put Sheffield Wednesday in with a chance of being in the play-offs next season or maybe even better than that.

“But this is massive news for the supporters, massive news for the club.

“It needs some stability, it’s got a great young manager there.

“We need Sheffield Wednesday back in the Premier League, and I believe that if the chairman backs Danny Rohl I think, and I’ve said this, he can deliver it within the next two seasons.”

Sheffield Wednesday secured a 20th-place finish in the Championship table with a 2-0 win over Sunderland on the final day of the season last weekend, avoiding relegation by just three points.

Keeping Rohl is huge news for Wednesday

Rohl has been so impressive since taking over the Owls last October, as nobody would’ve expected him to keep the team up when he arrived.

If not for Kieran McKenna’s heroics at Ipswich Town, he would’ve been an obvious pick for Championship manager of the year.

If he can be properly backed in the transfer market then there’s no reason why the team won’t continue to climb the table.

Wednesday have a lot of potential with Rohl as manager, so losing him due to not matching his ambitions would be a really bad sign.
