FA Cup final winning kits worn by Newcastle United star in two finals now going up for auction | OneFootball

Important items of Newcastle United history and interest is going up for auction, the kits worn by George Robledo when Newcastle United won the FA Cup in 1951 and 1952.

George Robledo played in the 1951 final when Newcastle beat Blackpool 2-0, both goals in that game scored by Jackie Milburn. Robledo’s shirt and shorts from that cup final expected (see below) to bring £6,000 at auction.

Whilst in 1952, the Chile international scored the only goal of the game for Newcastle to beat Arsenal at Wembley, the shirt and shorts from that final expected to bring £8,000 at auction.

The BBC had the entire 1951 FA Cup final live on radio, however, only the second half of that final against Blackpool was shown live by them (BBC) on TV.

Just as the BBC began to extend its football coverage, the Football League began to raise concerns about the effect that live television was having on attendances at other games being played at the same time and this impacted on the 1952 FA Cup final.

Despite late efforts to overturn the decision by a minority of its members, The FA Council banned the BBC from televising live Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Arsenal, when George Robledo scored that winning goal.

Instead, there were only updates on the first half on BBC radio before the second half was described live to listeners. To date this remains the last cup final not to be broadcast live on television, although the game was filmed by newsreel for showing that evening in cinemas. The BBC instead broadcast a cricket match between Worcestershire and the touring Indian team.

This conflict then led to the 1953 FA Cup final and all subsequent ones being moved to the end of the season, so as not to clash with any other games.

It would be great to see the new Newcastle United owners resurrect the idea of having a Newcastle United museum at St James Park. As part of that, it would make perfect sense for them to step in and buy up this George Robledo collection to be a key part of that new museum, sometime in the future, if anybody at the club is listening hopefully…

‘A football kit worn by the scorer of Newcastle United’s 1952 FA Cup-winning goal is going up for auction.

The black and white striped shirt and black shorts were worn by Chilean striker George Robledo when he scored in the 84th minute to beat Arsenal 1-0.

Graham Budd Auctions said the strip is estimated to fetch up to £8,000 at the auction on 25 May.

It is one of 12 lots of items being sold by Robledo’s daughter Elizabeth as she had “no-one to pass them on to”.

Ms Robledo, who recently came from Chile to unveil a plaque dedicated to her father and his footballing brother Ted at their home in Fenham, said she wanted the items to “go to a good home”.

She said: “I decided to bring the items with me as I am the last Robledo – I don’t have siblings or children to pass them on to.

“It’s been an emotional few weeks but I wanted to know that these items, which my father and I treasured, were being looked after and going to a good home.”

The shirt and shorts worn by Robledo in 1951 FA Cup Final, which Newcastle won 2-0 against Blackpool thanks to two goals from Jackie Milburn, are expected to fetch up to £6,000.

Adam Gascoigne of Graham Budd Auctions said Robledo was the first South American to score in an FA Cup final and the next Chilean to play in one was not until 2015 when Alexis Sanchez played for Arsenal.’
