Don Goodman has told FLW his verdict on Ipswich potentially reigniting their interest in Emmanuel Latte Lath
Don Goodman believes that Emmanuel Latte Lath would be the favourite for the Championship golden boot if he sealed a move to Ipswich Town this summer.
It was reported during the summer transfer window last year that the Suffolk outfit had an offer for the player rejected by Middlesbrough, with the deal worth £20 million.
However, the forward has since departed the Riverside, making the switch to Atlanta United in MLS during the January market.
But it was claimed earlier this summer that the Tractor Boys are interested in bringing the 26-year-old back to English football as a potential replacement for Liam Delap.
Goodman has claimed that it is up for debate whether Ipswich could even convince Latte Lath to come back to English football after moving to America earlier this year.
However, he believes that the 26-year-old has the potential to be the division’s top scorer if he made the move to Portman Road.
“Emmanuel Latte Lath obviously left Middlesbrough for Atlanta United and five goals in I think 19 starts, it’s not the same prolific striker that we saw at Middlesbrough, to be fair,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.
“So it hasn’t gone amazingly, it’s gone okay for him.
“Would he be open to a move back to England? It is debatable.
“I’m pretty sure that one of the major reasons he left Middlesbrough was for a big financial packet, would Ipswich be able to match or get anywhere near that? Up for debate.
“But if Ipswich could persuade him to go come back and play in the Championship next season, I’m pretty sure he would be one of the favourites to be the top scorer.
“So it would be a scenario worth investigating for them, but whether they can pull it off or not we will see.”
Ipswich have made just one signing so far this summer, bringing in David Button as a free agent after his exit from Reading.
Ipswich have lost Delap to Chelsea, so will likely want to bring someone in to take his place in the squad.
The Tractor Boys will also need goals if they are to compete for automatic promotion, and Latte Lath has shown he can do that at this level.
His record in MLS hasn’t been spectacular, but he has been adjusting to his new surroundings, so perhaps that is a factor Ipswich can overlook.
Any pursuit will ultimately be judged on the possible fee involved, but it could be worth trying to secure a deal if Latte Lath hasn’t been able to settle in Atlanta, which could make him available at a reasonable cost.
