League Two strugglers Gillingham have made an ambitious move for Peterborough United striker Jack Marriott, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.

The Kent club are under new ownership having recently been taken over by American businesmann Brad Galinson, and have recruited players such as Tom Nichols, Oli Hawkins and Timothee Dieng already to bolster their survival hopes as they currently sit bottom of the fourth tier.

They are now keen on bringing Marriott – who was made available for transfer by Grant McCann before he was sacked as Posh manager – to the Priestfield Stadium, although they face competition from rival League Two clubs and also outfits in League One.

Having been sold by Posh in 2018 to Derby County, Marriott returned to the Weston Homes Stadium on a free transfer in 2021 on a three-year deal.

Despite scoring nine Championship goals last season, he has not been a regular starter during the current campaign, with just 12 of his 21 league appearances coming off the bench, although he does have seven goals in all competitions to his name.

Posh could still be willing to let Marriott depart though despite hiring Darren Ferguson as their new manager, with Gillingham hoping to tempt the 28-year-old into making the move.
