It seems Jamie Carragher was impressed with Wigan Athletic winger Callum Lang during the Latics’ goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers on Monday night.

That’s after the Liverpool legend took to social media during the game, to praise the performance of the 24-year-old at Ewood Park.

Wigan began life under the management of Shaun Maloney with that clash with Blackburn, and were ultimately forced to settle for a point in a goalless draw that produced few clear chances for either side.

In what year were Wigan Athletic formed?

1892 1912 1932 1932

As a result, the Latics remain bottom of the Championship table, three points from safety, having won just once in their last 18 games across all competitions.

However, there were still positives to take from that performance at Blackburn, and it seems Carragher believes that the consistent threat of Lang out wide, was one of them.

Posting on Twitter during the game, the former England international – who son James is currently on loan at Oldham from Wigan – wrote: “Wigan need to keep getting the ball to @callumlang19 looks dangerous every time he gets on the ball!”

The Verdict

You do feel as though Lang will play a key role if Wigan are to get themselves out of trouble in the relegation battle this season.

The winger is often one of the Latics’ brightest performers, and you do always feel like he is someone who can make things happen in attack, when he is in possession.

Indeed, the fact that the likes of Carragher are highlighting his performance, is something that may only serve to give him even more confidence to push on with his efforts in attack.

As a result, with this a point that can be considered a solid one to take against a side chasing the play-offs, this does feel like an encouraging start to the Maloney management era at Wigan.
