Chelsea have to be open to all options up front this summer. It’s the number one position to strengthen, yet some of the options they’re looking at are going to be prohibitively expensive.

It may well be that Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres and the like all go to Champions League teams, and we’re left without our top targets. We have to be ready to react in those situations, and one of the prized mid-range options is without doubt Serhou Guirassy.

Caught Offside are today reporting that we have added the striker to our shortlist. The 28 year old has scored a superb 27 goals for Stuttgart this season, and is the Bundesliga’s hottest striker after Harry Kane. A true late bloomer, he wasn’t on anyone’s list until this season he finally clicked in a good team and starter scoring for fun.

There will be other teams interested, but we should be a contender if we can qualify for the Europa League.

Guirassy has certainly got a lot of doubters. That will tend to happen when you just bumble along as a journeyman forward for many years and then suddenly burst into life as a goal machine. Can he keep it up in the years to come? Nobody is quite sure, and plenty would say no.

But for €20m, that’s a gamble worth taking. Nicolas Jackson already has the tools to be a great striker, he just needs time and work. Why not bring in a cheap alternative with a prove eye for goal in the meantime? It makes sense to us.

There is one thing to be wary of – that release clause is set low, but it can be bid up by other teams. We have to know how much we really value Guirassy at, and not get dragged into an escalation of price.
