We want to debunk this morning’s shock story over Ianis Hagi as coming from the DR, but it doesn’t – it’s reports, and confirmation in fact, sourced from Romania, that the prized playmaker has secured a £17M deal (€20M) to join Roma, having impressed Jose Mourinho.

Sport.ro and Pro TV in that neck of the woods claim that Rangers have accepted a £17M bid from Mourinho and the Romans and Hagi will move out there in January, claims which have surfaced due to his excellent season thus far.

Following his absence due to Covid recently his return on Wednesday night changed the game, and you can be absolutely 100% sure he’s been scouted before, and that Romanian channels are watching the playmaker’s Ibrox progress keenly.

So his instant second half impact clearly impressed those back home, with Jose Mourinho reportedly hitting the front of the queue of admirers.

€20M for Hagi would represent a massive profit and return for overall 2021’s most effective Ibrox attacker, having seen the ex-Genk star take his form from last season over to this one. That form has clearly alerted suitors. He cost £3M.

Time will tell if these stories from Romania have any foundation, but it’s not from the Scottish or even British press so it’s less likely to be a complete fabrication.

Roman rivals Lazio were also said to be very interested in Hagi, but couldn’t afford his price so moved on. Sevilla are/were also on the radar.

But it seems like the Giallorossi have stolen a major march and could well sign him for the third-highest Scottish fee ever.

Time will tell.
