Harry Kane set to sit out as Lee Carsley aims for a third straight win as Three Lions interim boss

England take on Greece for the first time in 18 years in the Nations League at Wembley tonight.

Lee Carsley is searching for a third straight win as Three Lions interim manager as he states his case to be named as Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor.

Both sides won their opening two Group B2 games, convincingly defeating the Republic of Ireland and Finland respectively, but the Greeks currently sit top due to their superior goal difference.

England come into the game as heavy favourites, and have never lost to Greece in nine previous meetings, seven of which they won. It is the 2-2 draw and David Beckham’s last-minute free kick 23 years ago this month that sent England to the 2002 World Cup, though, that remains the standout moment.

The Three Lions will be looking to extend that record to 10 games, as they look to make an instant return to Nations League A.

Tributes are set to be paid at Wembley to Greece international and former Sheffield United defender George Baldock, who has died at the age of 31.

Date, kick-off time and venue

England vs Greece is scheduled for a 7:45pm BST kick-off tonight on Thursday October 10, 2024.

The match will take place at Wembley Stadium in London.

England vs Greece team news

Harry Kane will not be fit enough to start the game, with Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke among his understudies and John Stones taking the captain’s armband.

Tottenham striker Solanke has earned his first call-up in seven years, while Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Kyle Walker will all hope to feature for the first time since the Euro 2024 final.

Jack Grealish is doubtful with a knock, while Curtis Jones and Tino Livramento have both been added to the squad after the withdrawals of Ezri Konsa, Morgan Gibbs-White and Kobbie Mainoo.

Greece have no major injury concerns, and will hope West Ham’s Konstantinos Mavropanos and Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas can help them to a famous result.

England vs Greece prediction

Despite the likely absence of Kane, it’s hard to see anything but a comfortable win for England here against a side that currently sit down in 48th in the latest FIFA world rankings.

Another straightforward victory and impressive attacking performance at Wembley will do Carsley’s permanent job prospects no harm at all.

England to win, 3-0.
