Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo is on the brink of his first-ever start in the European Championship last-16 clash against Slovakia on Sunday.

He was introduced off the bench against Serbia and Slovenia but did not feature in England’s 1-1 draw against Denmark.

Gareth Southgate has failed to bring the best out of his midfield, and there have been calls for Mainoo to start in the next game.

Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins has heaped praise on Mainoo.

He said (via ITV Football): “He doesn’t act his age. He’s very mature on and off the pitch. Again, unbelievable English talent.

“(He’s) got the world at his feet. I can’t speak more highly of him. He’s athletic and the composure on the ball = to take the ball and receive it in tight areas as a midfielder.

“It’s, you know, I think that sets you apart, especially for the way we want to play. He is so comfortable on the ball. You can see why he’s so comfortable on the ball.

“You can see why he has been called into the squad because he has done it in his breakout season this year.”

Southgate must start Mainoo against Slovakia

The 19-year-old enjoyed a sensational season with Man United.

Mainoo rose through the ranks to play for United’s first team and has now established himself as a regular under Erik ten Hag.

Southgate has faced plenty of heat in recent weeks for his conservative team selections.

He has ignored Mainoo and picked Trent Alexander-Arnold and Connor Gallagher to start ahead of him.

The United starlet showed the difference he can make when given an opportunity against Slovenia. He was happy to receive the ball in tight areas and willing to take more risks.

Watkins is not the only one who has been impressed with Mainoo’s astonishing technical ability. Pundits and England fans have backed him.

Mainoo will hopefully have the chance to deliver on the international stage for England in an important game.
