Portuguese head coach invited board to sack him following Europa League final defeat

Manchester United’s hierarchy are fully backing Ruben Amorim despite their defeat in the Europa League final, reports say.

Instead, the Portuguese has overseen a torrid season, with United down in 16th in the Premier League table and now without European football next term, which could make an already tricky summer transfer window even more difficult when it comes to luring top players to Old Trafford.

In his post-match press conference, Amorim had asserted that he would not discuss his future in any great detail, but proceeded to do exactly that by insisting that he would not walk away.

"I have nothing to show to the fans," the former Sporting head coach said. "So, in this moment it is a little bit of faith.

"Let's see. I am always open. If the board and fans feel I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation.

"But I will not quit. I am really confident in my job. And as you see, I will not change anything in the way I do things."

Amorim spoke of United’s “two plans” of attack for the upcoming transfer window come the end of the current campaign, acknowledging that it was “tough” for a club like United to not have European football to offer prospective signings.

Amorim said: “We have to use the other side.

“If we have more time to think and work during the week, to be better in the Premier League, that will be our focus.”

Luke Shaw told fans that “we are very sorry” and that United are “at rock bottom now”.

The England left-back, who featured as part of Amorim’s back three in Bilbao, staunchly backed his manager after the game.

“I can say 100 per cent right now that he’s the right man,” Shaw said.

Diogo Dalot, who has featured heavily under Amorim since his compatriot took charge, said “the last thing we need right now is instability”, labelling the season “a disaster”.
