A petition has been started to temporarily rename the White Cliffs of Dover the Ellen White Cliffs of Dover in honour of England Women's all-time top goalscorer ahead of Euro 2022.

The Euros kick off at Old Trafford on 6 July, marking the first time that England has played host to a major women's football tournament in 17 years.

To honour the occasion, travel brand Snaptrip - who have previously been responsible for painting letterboxes gold in celebration of Team GB's success at the Olympics and renaming Southgate Street in Gloucester 'Gareth Southgate Street' - have gone one bigger, targeting a rebrand of an iconic strip of English coastline.

The White Cliffs of Dover were lit up on Thursday evening with a projected, 200ft image of England striker White.

The 33-year-old has come alive on the big stage at the past two major tournaments, netting six goals for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics, and hitting the same figure during England's run to the semi finals of the 2019 World Cup.

White reached a half century of goals for England during World Cup qualifying in April, and could surpass Wayne Rooney as her country's all-time top goal scorer at Euro 2022. She is currently three goals shy of the former Manchester United striker's record haul of 53 goals for England.

"With this summer's tournament taking place in England it seemed only right to celebrate one of the best footballers the country has to offer, at one of the UK’s most iconic landmarks," said Matthew Fox, CEO of Snaptrip Group.

“The petition started out as a bit of fun, but it would be fantastic to see such a famous landmark embrace a temporary new identity in support of the national women’s team."
