Everton have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

According to Calciomercato, the Brazilian midfielder failed to report for pre-season training at Juventus, sparking renewed speculation about his long-term future.

Luiz only joined the Serie A giants last summer, but it hasn’t gone according to plan. He struggled to make an impact, although recurring injuries were part of the problem.

He featured 27 times across all competitions for Juventus last season but only started six games.

Luiz was part of the Juventus squad that travelled to the United States for the Club World Cup, but hardly got a look in as he was handed just 45 minutes of action.

Despite having limited opportunities to showcase his talent, Luiz still created three big chances in Serie A and was successful in 55 percent of his duels both in the air and on the ground.

After struggling to find his feet at Juventus, he could be on the move once again, and a return to the Premier League is his best option.

Luiz has also been linked with West Ham United and Manchester United.

Journalist Dean Jones claims the Hammers have already tried to sign Luiz on a loan deal but were rejected by Juventus, who only want to negotiate a permanent transfer.

United also have their hands full with other transfer targets. That doesn’t completely rule them out of the race, but it gives Everton time to formulate a plan to sign Luiz.

Juventus are preparing to take disciplinary action against Luiz and expect him to leave the club this summer.

Luiz’s Premier League experience and proven quality make him an appealing option for Everton.

Manager David Moyes is keen to rebuild the Everton squad in his image and use last season’s 13th-place finish in the Premier League as a springboard to greater things.

Luiz is valued at €30 million (£25m) on Transfermarkt, but it is unclear how much Juventus will demand to let him leave.
