Denis Zakaria (27), after a season on the periphery whilst on loan at Chelsea, bounced back at AS Monaco last season, featuring regularly and performing consistently alongside Youssouf Fofana as the Principality club returned to the UEFA Champions League.
Fofana has since left Monaco, as expected, to join AC Milan. Zakaria has remained, and with the departure of Wissam Ben Yedder, he has been handed the captain’s armband for this campaign – a sign of his importance to Les Monégasques, as well as his leadership qualities as one of the most experienced players in what is a youthful dressing room.
Fabrizio Romano understands that the former Juventus and Chelsea midfielder has been the subject of approaches from unnamed Premier League clubs. However, with Fofana already having left, and given Zakaria’s importance in the dressing room and on the pitch, he is considered untouchable by the hierarchy at Monaco. A departure is therefore not on the cards.
