Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has clinched the Premier League’s Golden Glove award for the 2023-24 season. With Jordan Pickford unable to surpass Raya’s 14 clean sheets after Luton scored against Everton on Friday night, the Spaniard’s victory is confirmed.

Raya is the first Arsenal goalkeeper since Petr Cech (2016) to win the award. Other winners include Pepe Reina, Edwin van der Sar, Joe Hart, Wojciech Szczesny, Thibaut Courtois, David de Gea, Alisson and Ederson.

Raya’s achievement is particularly impressive given his loan move to Arsenal from Brentford last summer. He has become a mainstay of Arsenal’s defence, a key factor in their league-leading record. Despite playing only 29 league matches, Raya’s consistent performances, helped by a team determined to protect their goal, have led to this individual accolade.

Initially, Raya’s arrival at Arsenal raised questions, as it displaced fan favourite Aaron Ramsdale. However, Raya’s form, including a heroic penalty shootout performance against Porto in the Champions League, have more than proved his worth.

Arsenal will make Raya’s loan move permanent this summer for a pre-agreed fee of £27m in addition to the £3m loan fee they paid to bring him to the Emirates. While manager Mikel Arteta has remained non-committal publicly about the transfer, Raya’s Golden Glove win further solidifies his status as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper.
