The five biggest stories of the day but so much more digestible, so you know everything you need to.
Marcus Rashford has criticised an unofficial Manchester United fan channel on Twitter for spreading rumours about his relationship with the club. The channel questioned Rashford’s absence from Saturday’s win over Fulham due to injury and suggested it was a form of punishment. The England striker defended himself, urging them to stop spreading malicious rumours. The incident followed the 26-year-old’s birthday celebration in the aftermath United’s defeat in the Manchester derby, which was deemed “unacceptable” by manager Erik ten Hag last week.
Erling Haaland is doubtful for Manchester City’s Champions League match against Young Boys on Tuesday after twisting his ankle during Saturday’s Premier League win over Bournemouth. Manager Pep Guardiola will assess Haaland’s fitness after a training session Monday. Guardiola is open to resting Haaland but will listen to doctors’ advice. City can secure qualification for the knockout stages with a win over the Swiss outfit.
England will play friendlies against Brazil and Belgium at Wembley in March in preparation for Euro 2024. Coach Gareth Southgate aims to test his team against top opposition, emphasising the importance of also securing positive results in the upcoming qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, despite the fact England have already qualified for next summer’s tournament. The Three Lions last faced Belgium in 2020 and haven’t played Brazil in six years.
Inter’s Benjamin Pavard is expected to be sidelined until the new year due to a knee injury. The Frenchman dislocated his left patella during Saturday’s win over Atalanta and will wear a brace for a month before beginning rehabilitation. The 27-year-old is unlikely to play for club or country again in 2023.
