Inter Milan have dealt a fresh injury blow as Benjamin Pavard is expected to be ruled out of action for up to two months.
The French centre-back was withdrawn in the first half of the weekend’s Serie A clash against Atalanta with a serious knee injury.
Inter have released a statement that the 2018 World Cup winner has sustained a dislocated kneecap and will have to wear a knee brace for up to four weeks.
Pavard will then begin his rehabilitation and is unlikely to take the field again for at least two months, suggests Sky Sport Italia.
The Nerazzurri emerged victorious over La Dea, but their evening was blighted by Pavard’s injury.
There was distress among the Inter camp as the former Bayern Munich star was visibly in agony when he was stretchered off the field.
The rehabilitation will be a long process, and the Nerazzurri will be hoping for the Frenchman to pull through it without any setbacks.
Arriving for a fee worth €30 million from Bayern this summer, Pavard has become an integral member of Simone Inzaghi’s side this season.
Although chances were hard to come by in the first few games, the 27-year-old has since nailed down a regular place in the starting eleven, impressing Inzaghi with his top-notch performances.
Pavard’s absence is a significant setback, but the Nerrazzurri have enough depth to shore up the backline.
Matteo Darmian, Francesco Acerbi, Stefan de Vrij, Federico Dimarco, Alessandro Bastoni and Carlos Augusto provide Inzaghi flexibility in the defence.
The 2-1 victory over Atalanta, thanks to goals from Hakan Calhanoglu and Lautaro Martinez, saw Inter extend their lead at the top of the table by two points over the weekend.
