After scoring twice in Real Madrid’s stunning El Clásico victory on Saturday, Jude Bellingham’s week could be about to get even better. According to sources in Spain, the 20-year-old will be awarded the Kopa Trophy at Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, which will see him recognised as the best U21 player in the world. Barcelona’s Gavi won the Kopa Trophy last year, and it looks like Bellingham is about to snatch something else from Madrid’s fierce rivals.
Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has received a three-year ban from FIFA due to his post-game behaviour at the Women’s World Cup final, including an unwanted kiss given to Jenni Hermoso during Spain’s celebrations after defeating England. This ban excludes Rubiales from all football-related activities at both national and international level. The decision is subject to a potential appeal.
Former Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater, best known for his key role in their unexpected Premier League title win, has retired at 33 after being without a club for over a year. Drinkwater won the league title with the Foxes in 2016 and had a challenging spell at Chelsea followed by numerous loans. He also earned three caps for England.
FIFA has offered its support to Luis Díaz after the Liverpool winger’s parents were kidnapped in Colombia. Díaz’s mother has been rescued, but his father remains missing. Reds boss Jürgen Klopp has said the player’s welfare is the club’s priority after Díaz missed Sunday’s win over Nottingham Forest and returned home to be closer to his family.
