Danny Drinkwater, best remembered for being a key part of Leicester’s shock Premier League title win, has announced his retirement.

Despite being just 33, the midfielder had been without a club since being released by Chelsea over a year ago.

A series of unsuitable offers to return to the game ultimately made his mind up to officially hang up his boots.

“It’s probably been a long time coming, especially with the last year, but I think it’s time to officially announce it now,” he told the High Performance Podcast.

“I’ve been ready for it, not stopping at my peak and things have simmered down a bit so that’s helped the transition.

“I’ve been in limbo for too long, I’ve either been wanting to play but not getting the opportunities to play at a level where I felt valued.

“If I was playing week in, week out and had to stop through injury or age I think it would be trickier. I’ve had quite a few offers from Championship clubs but I never felt the burn, it did nothing for me.”

Drinkwater came through the academy at Manchester United but failed to make an appearance before leaving for Leicester in 2012.

He famously won the league title with the Foxes in 2016 which earned him a move to Chelsea, where things didn’t work out and he spent the majority of that spell out on loan (with Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpaşa and Reading).

In addition, he also won three England caps.
