Away from Ligue 1 Uber Eats action this week, Olympique Lyonnais and Strasbourg will both face off in the first quarter-final fixture of the Coupe de France this evening. Whilst Les Gones managed to advance into the final eight thanks to a win over Lille in the last 16 (2-1), Les Alsaciens managed to secure their spot following a clear 3-1 victory over Le Havre.
Lyon have romped up the Ligue 1 table in recent weeks, and are currently on a five-match winning run in all competitions. It seems to be paying off in the stands, with around 54,000 tickets already sold for the fixture, it could see Groupama back to its best with a sold-out stadium to face Strasbourg.
"The attendance is a measure of our progress,” said manager Pierre Sage about Lyon fans returning to see their side. “There are a lot of people behind the team, which is perfect for us. And our idea is to make sure that the many spectators are happy to see their team give everything to get through this round.”
Patrick Vieira: ‘Coupe de France a chance to show unity’
Strasbourg are currently going through a tough patch of form, with no wins in their last six Ligue 1 encounters, but have an opportunity to reach the semi-final stage of France’s historic cup competition this season. “Of course this situation affects the players, it also affects the staff, and it affects me because we all want to see Racing go as far as possible,” said Strasbourg manager Patrick Vieira at his pre-match press conference.
“The fans' discontent is understandable because we ourselves are not satisfied with our performance. We need our supporters, and it's up to us to do what we need to do,” explained the Frenchman, adding “This Coupe de France match will be an opportunity to show them that the group is still united.”
