Born on May 7, 1999, Cody Gakpo has steadily grown into one of the most exciting Dutch forwards of his generation. His birthday marks not just the passage of time, but the progression of a career that has balanced brilliance with adversity, promise with pressure. From his early days in the PSV Eindhoven academy to lighting up the World Cup stage and battling expectations at Liverpool, Gakpo’s journey reflects both resilience and remarkable potential.
Gakpo began his professional career at PSV Eindhoven, a club deeply rooted in the development of Dutch talent. He made his senior debut in 2016, and over the following seasons, he became a central figure in their attack. By the 2021–22 season, he was the Eredivisie Player of the Year, recording an impressive 21 goals and 15 assists in all competitions. Known for his versatility, pace, and ability to cut in from the left flank, Gakpo quickly attracted interest from Europe’s top leagues.
In January 2023, Gakpo made a high-profile move to Liverpool FC following a breakout performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Representing the Netherlands, he was arguably the standout performer during the group stage, scoring in all three group matches against Senegal, Ecuador, and Qatar as the Dutch topped their group.
However, his transition to the Premier League was far from seamless. Gakpo was thrust into a Liverpool team undergoing a period of instability, with fluctuating form and mounting injury problems. He was played in multiple attacking positions, including as a false nine, during which he struggled for consistency. Despite 10 contributions in 21 games, critics questioned whether he could replicate his PSV and international form in a more competitive, faster paced league.
Despite the rocky start, Gakpo showcased resilience. He gradually adapted to Jurgen Klopp’s tactical system, improved his work rate off the ball, and began contributing more goals and assists. His performances in key matches, particularly against rivals like Manchester United, hinted at his potential. At the conclusion of the 2023–24 season he had evolved into a value part of the Liverpool squad, scoring 12 goals and contributing 7 assists in league and cup competitions.
The club’s trust in Gakpo, particularly by new manager Arne Slot, was rewarded in this current 2024-25 season. To date, he’s improved his total contributions to 23 (17 goals; 6 assists) in all competitions.
Internationally, Gakpo remains an integral part of Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad, often deployed in a fluid front line. His performances in the Euro 2024 qualifiers and Nations League matches have affirmed his importance in the Dutch setup. Gakpo has scored 15 goals for his country on 38 caps.
Beyond statistics, Gakpo represents the new breed of players that is technically gifted, tactically flexible, and mentally strong. His challenges at Liverpool have tested his resolve, but they’ve also shaped a more mature, rounded player. As he turns 26, Cody Gakpo’s journey is far from over, but already he has shown that he belongs on the game’s biggest stages.
With his struggles, achievements, and more club opportunities on the horizon, Gakpo stands not just as a birthday celebrant but as a figure of hope for Dutch’s soccer future. Happy Birthday Cody!
