Amid speculation that FC Barcelona could receive the green light to return to Spotify Camp Nou for the La Liga game against Valencia, it appears that the outlook is not that optimistic.

Indeed, according to the latest update from RAC1, Barcelona’s board received a communication from the City Council confirming that the Spotify Camp Nou cannot yet be reopened.

The reigning La Liga champions are set to host Valencia soon after the international break, on 14 September. The idea had been to play the game at the renovated Camp Nou, provided the club received the go-ahead, but that appears unlikely.

Indeed, this weekend, Barça were informed by the Barcelona City Council that reopening the stadium by those dates is still not possible.

As it stands, unless a miracle happens, the La Liga game will be played at Estadi Johan Cruyff, Barcelona’s reserve team stadium. As per the report, the club have received the league’s approval for this alternative.

All this comes after the City Council requested that Barça carry out improvements in some areas of the Spotify Camp Nou before granting the first occupancy permit.

The result of last Tuesday’s inspection was that improvements are required in interior areas that have been damaged by recent heavy rains.

If Barça resolve these issues and submit either a new final works certificate or an annexure detailing the improvements, the club could soon obtain the first occupancy permit.

There is optimism about being able to play Champions League matches at the Camp Nou, since the works have progressed significantly over the past 15 days, with phase 1B, which includes the lateral stand, expected to be completed shortly.

However, the Valencia game seems set to be played at Estadi Johan Cruyff.
