Chelsea’s most in-form star doubles his chances created; now 4th in league and rising

Chelsea’s best player in last night’s win wasn’t one of the goalscorers. As we pointed out in our piece on the whistle, it was Enzo Fernandez who ran the show.

He picked up two assists and ran the show before being taken off at half time to keep him fresh for this weekend. It marked a continuation of his steadily improving form since he arrived at Chelsea, with most people saying that this is Enzo’s best period of form since he signed.

In the wake of that, Sky Sports did a good piece about the Argentine and his season. They note that he was dropped for the reverse fixture against Liverpool back in November. Since then he’s started 22 or 23 games and played in a much more advanced role, as you can see in their graphic here:

Enzo Fernandez’s position change this season.

That move really shows up in the stats – last season he created 32 chances all season. He’s more than doubled it this season, sitting on 73 with 4 games to go. That makes him the fourth best chance creator in the division. He’s just 4 goal contributions short of Cole Palmer now, despite having far more defensive responsibility.

Still much for Enzo to improve – and Sunday is the perfect chance to prove himself

It’s not perfect yet – we criticised the failure of his partnership with Caicedo in the crucial games against Brentford and Ipswich where we managed 1 point and seemed to have cost ourselves a chance of making the Champions League places.

We’re really excited to see what the pair of them can do this weekend against a Liverpool midfield who have proved hard to match for most teams in the league this year. The presence of Romeo Lavia adds an extra dimension to things.

If the trio can match up with the Reds, that will be a sign of real progress.
