Chelsea crowned back-to-back champions

The race for the WSL title between Chelsea and Manchester City was down to the wire.

To steal it on the last day, City needed to either beat West Ham by four goals or see the Blues lose to Reading.

However, Emma Hayes’ side only had eyes for the silverware and Melanie Leupolz scored 68 seconds in before Sam Kerr, Erin Cuthbert and two from Fran Kirby capped off a 5-0 win.

With the win, Chelsea are the first club to retain the league title since Liverpool in 2014 and are also now the club with the most championships (4).

Additionally, before kick-off at Kingsmeadow Stadium, football legend Fara Williams was presented with a shirt from her former club as she wrapped up her professional career.

Meanwhile, over at Chigwell Stadium, City struggled against West Ham despite being dominant on the pitch with 80 per cent possession.

Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle each had a penalty saved by Mackenzie Arnold and City hit the woodwork multiple times throughout the match.

Eventually, Ellen White found the back of the net for the visitors to secure a 1-0 win but they come up short in the title race.

Looking towards next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League, Chelsea and City will be joined by Arsenal in the competition.

Bristol City relegated

At the other end of the table, the relegation battle was just as tight as the race for the title.

Heading into the final day, Birmingham City, Aston Villa and Bristol City all had the potential to be relegated.

In the end, Bristol’s 3-1 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion sees them drop to the Championship.

Leicester City will take over their spot next season.

Alongside the historic title win, two Chelsea players took home individual WSL awards.

For the Golden Boot race, Sam Kerr led Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema by two goals and her strike against Reading brought her tally to 21 this season to secure the award.

Additionally, Chelsea’s goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger edged Manchester City’s Ellie Roebuck to the Golden Glove after Sunday’s clean sheet.

Sunday’s other results…

  1. Arsenal 0-0 Aston Villa
  2. Birmingham City 0-1 Tottenham
  3. Manchester United 2-0 Everton
