Chelsea’s Club World Cup was a success regardless of last night’s result, and has capped off a really positive run since the end of the season.

Not only did they qualify for the Champions League and win the Club World Cup, they also made really positive moves in the transfer market – both early and decisive. Even the pundits are starting to praise them.

Pundits praises Chelsea’s summer so far

Julien Laurens has been very critical of Chelsea’s ownership, transfer strategy and their manager in recent times (as most of us have), but he’s increasingly positive about the direction the club are going, as he explained in his recent appearance on TalkSport:

Joao Pedro looks great, Liam Delap looks great. We talked a lot about Chelsea signings in the past, not making much sense, and we were wondering, like, how are they building that squad?

“But so far this summer, I think they’ve been quite spot on with the players they have signed, and then you’ve got Cole Palmer. I like Maresca, I like what he’s trying to do.”

Just two months have passed since Laurens was criticising Maresca for getting “everything wrong” in the crunch game against Newcastle, showing what a crazy upwards trajectory there has been since then.

What Chelsea still need to add to improve this summer even further

Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto after the former’s superb goal.

Certainly Joao Pedro and Liam Delap have added a huge amount to our firepower up top, and Dario Essugo and Andrey Santos add quality and depth to the midfield.

Estevao Willian may take some time to be ready to start regularly, but he’s already a dangerous wild card.

Add a top class centre-back, a solid backup left back and a top goalkeeper and we really would be talking about a dream summer.
