Chelsea are edging closer to securing the signing of Ajax centre-back Jorrel Hato, according to The Athletic.

While a full agreement has yet to be finalised, the two clubs are reportedly nearing a compromise on a fee in excess of €40m (£35m) for the 19-year-old.

It is understood that personal terms have already been agreed between Hato and Chelsea, and the defender asked to be left out of Ajax’s squad for Sunday’s Como Cup final.

A member of the Netherlands side beaten by eventual winners England at the Under-21 European Championships in Slovakia this summer, Hato is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in the game - and here are five of his best stats in the Eredivisie last season.

- Composed and comfortable in possession, Hato recorded an impressive pass completion percentage of 90% last term in the Dutch top flight.

- Remarkably, no Ajax player recorded more Eredivisie assists last season than Hato (6).

- Hato topped the charts among Ajax players for tackles won in 24/25 with 58.

- The defender ranked third among Ajax players for aerials won with 51, but notably played second fiddle to his central defensive partner Josip Sutalo (65) in this regard.

- Hato won the Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year award for the 2024/25 season, as voted for by the Eredivisie's 18 head coaches and the national team coach.
