In a recent segment on Youtube, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Chelsea are working on a deal for Ajax defender Jorrel Hato this summer. Romano said,
“Chelsea are working on Hato and Xavi Simons. They won’t always close deals in 24 hours. Sometimes you have to negotiate and discuss.
“For example, for Hato, Chelsea are using the old deal made by Arsenal a few years ago for Jurrien Timber – same position, same club – for the fee. They want to spend €40m and that’s their idea in negotiations with Ajax. Ajax want more, so talks are ongoing. Chelsea feel strong because the player has taken a strong position as he’s told Ajax he wants to go.
“My feeling is that this deal will happen. The relationship between the clubs is very good.”
Hato enjoyed a solid campaign at the Dutch club as he put in a run of impressive displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The Dutch talent participated in 50 matches for Ajax last season, netting three goals and earning six assists in various competitions.
The 19-year-old was a consistent performer when defending inside his half after he made 58 tackles, 35 blocks and 22 interceptions in the Dutch Eredivisie. He even distributed possession relatively well based on his pass completion rate of 89.4% in the Dutch first division (stats via fbref.com).

Hato is a tough-tackling full-back who can make some important interceptions for his team on the defensive third of the pitch. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when needed and can even play his way out from the back.
The Dutch youngster can set up a few inviting chances for his teammates to score from the left flank. Hato mainly operates as a left-back but can also fill in as a central defender if needed. However, there are some concerns over whether he would be able to make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League.
Hato is already good enough to serve as a decent rotational piece in Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca’s squad. At 19, he has the potential to be a future star at the West London club. Therefore, the Blues should focus on getting a deal done for him soon.
Hato is undoubtedly a prospect to watch out for in the future and would be a great signing for Chelsea in the long run.
