Chelsea have proposed that clubs should be allowed to choose from nine substitutes ahead of the restart of the Premier League season later this month.

Several clubs have expressed fears over the risk of increased injuries ahead of the league’s restart, the enforced suspension of the campaign amid the coronavirus pandemic and the congested period in which to conclude the season raising concerns.

Changes have already been made to the rulings for substitutes with The International Football Association Board (IFAB) having announced a temporary changing to the rules, allowing clubs to make five substitutes throughout the course of 90 minutes.

The Premier League are expected utilise this change, though Chelsea are proposing an increase in the number of replacements at each manager’s disposal.

According to the Telegraph, the west London side have proposed an increase from seven to nine, the concept set to be discussed at the next Premier League Shareholder’s meeting on Thursday, where ‘it is expected to receive support from other clubs and managers’ ahead of a vote.
