On Friday, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard confirmed that Jorginho will be this season’s vice-captain.
The Blues paid £52m for his services last season and the midfielder immediately became a first-choice option, already having made 64 appearances for the club.
In his pre-match press conference, Lampard explained why he made the decision to put the Italy international in the role.
“Yes, Jorginho is vice-captain as it stands. Azpi [Azpilicueta] is captain, that was clear at the start of the season, and I think his professionalism and his career here speaks for itself.
“And Jorginho, I keep talking about him as a character, and he’s a driver. I think it’s very evident to see on the pitch. So that’s the situation as it stands.”
Chelsea, who are currently in seventh place on 11 points, will travel to St. Mary’s to face Southampton on Sunday.
