The Blues headed into the game as favourites and that only became more so just four minutes in when Villa goalkeeper Anna Leat was shown a straight red card after just four minutes into the tie for handling the ball outside the penalty area.

Chelsea made the player advantage count within 15 minutes when Amy Beever-Jones volleyed home from a Niamh Charles cross from the left-hand side. They pushed for a second, and it duly arrived seven minutes before half time when Maika Hamano stabbed home a low cross for her first goal as a Chelsea player.

With goal difference potentially set to play a huge part in who lifts the WSL trophy come the end of the campaign, Emma Hayes’ side dominated the second half but despite that, they could only manage one more goal, courtesy of Kadeisha Buchanan, who nodded home a corner just after the hour.

Despite racking up 21 shots on the Villa goal and seven on target, they couldn’t add to their three goal tally in the final half hour of the game.

However, it was still enough to see them leapfrog Manchester City on goal difference, while Villa will be left licking their wounds after managing to muster just a single shot on target.
