Chelsea‘s interest in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is “surprising” but could pick up pace in the days ahead, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The £270,000 per-week star has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, just six months after he swapped the Premier League for La Liga when he joined Barcelona from Arsenal.

What’s the latest news involving Aubameyang?

According to the Telegraph, the Blues are interested in Aubameyang, whose opportunities at the Nou Camp could reduce following the recent arrival of Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

Aubameyang only arrived in January, with his Arsenal career ending sourly after he was stripped of the captaincy and then axed from the squad by Mikel Arteta, which meant his last game was before Christmas.

But Barca’s financial problems could see him make a swift return to English football, with the west Londoners still in desperate need of a striker after Romelu Lukaku joined Inter Milan, while Armando Broja continues to be linked away, leaving Kai Havertz the favourite to start the campaign.

Chelsea have also been linked with Wesley Fofana and Kyle Walker-Peters this week, while they’re set to wrap up a deal for Marc Cucurella despite Brighton releasing a statement that nothing has been agreed.

What did Jones say about Aubameyang?

Jones expects to hear more about the Gabon international in the coming days, but has been left surprised by some of the names being mentioned with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent days.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I know there’s been some whispers in the last 24 hours about Aubameyang and Chelsea. I think that we are going to hear more and more about that.

“I think the other thing to consider is that all of the business in the last week has been quite surprising.”

Would Aubameyang be a good signing for Chelsea?

Off the field problems aside, Aubameyang is still one of the best strikers in Europe on his day.

Even after his desperate final days at Arsenal, he managed to rediscover his best form in Spain, scoring 13 goals in 23 games, which proves that he’s still capable of finding the net on a regular basis in top-flight football.

Besides his final six months in north London, the ex-Borussia Dortmund star regularly scored 20+ top-flight goals, with his overall tally in the league 68 goals in just 128 appearances.

At 33-years-old, it’s unclear how many years Aubameyang has left at the top, but for the next couple of seasons, Chelsea could do far worse.
