Chelsea has enjoyed a long yet productive campaign which ended in a positive fashion as they secured a last-gasp 2-1 win over Watford at Stamford Bridge last weekend. Thomas Tuchel’s men deserve a lot of credit for adding the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup to their trophy cabinet this season. The Blues also managed to make it to two domestic cup finals as they lost to Liverpool on penalties in both those competitions.

Chelsea’s 2021-22 Season Review: Major Talking Points

Chelsea began this campaign with a win over Villarreal on penalties in the Super Cup final which gave them the confidence to go on a five-game unbeaten run to start the Premier League season. However, they were eventually beaten by Manchester City back in October.

The West London club’s form was excellent during the first few months of this campaign but they suffered a minor setback at the start of December when they lost to West Ham United by a 3-2 scoreline in the London derby.

Chelsea had a slight dip in form in January but managed to get to the Carabao Cup final which they lost to Liverpool on penalties by a 10-11 margin. The Blues had a difficult time in April as they were dumped out of the UEFA Champions League by Real Madrid over two legs. Their league form suffered because of it.

Tuchel managed to steady the ship and take his team to another cup final, this time in the FA Cup. However, history repeated itself as Liverpool once again narrowly edged them out on penalties. Chelsea had little to play for in the latter stages of this season as they were knocked out of all the cup competitions and had already made the third position in the Premier League their own by then.

Chelsea’s Best Players Of The 2021-22 Campaign

Edouard Mendy

The Senegalese goalkeeper was in fine form as he kept 23 clean sheets in 49 matches while conceding 40 goals in the process across all fronts. If it wasn’t for him, Chelsea would have struggled to find consistency at some of the most crucial moments of this campaign.

Reece James

The English talent continued to establish himself as a strong presence at the back. However, his technical quality and passing have improved over the past ten months. James was at times Tuchel’s primary playmaker which says a lot about how important he has become for them as a versatile wide player.

Thiago Silva

At the age of 37, the Brazilian centre-back has continued to excel as a dominant figure on the defensive end of the field. He has also chipped in with some goals and assists during this campaign and deserves to be a player of the year contender at the West London club.
