Former Chelsea FA Cup winner Marcel Desailly believes the club need to sign at least two more experienced players to help them challenge for top four next season.

Chelsea are currently 19 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in what has been another disappointing season for the Blues.

World Cup-winner Desailly, who won two major trophies during his time with the club, including the UEFA Super Cup, believes that Chelsea already possesses a promising young squad, but that experience must be added in the summer in order to launch a serious push for a place in the Champions League.

“I think with Chelsea it is a process, it is a matter of time,” he said at the Laureus Sports Awards in Madrid.

“They have invested. People will say they have spent too much. It’s around a billion isn’t it? The only mistake I think they have made they thought they could make it work in the first year. I’m not sure that the type of coach that they hired was ready to handle this category of players.

“They need to get the Champions League to help the financial side of things. They will be looking to bring players in and out.

“I think they need at least two experienced players that can help the existing talent that Chelsea have. I really believe they have top talent in the club.

“They have to dispose some players. They need to sign more clinical players.”
