The Borussia Dortmund women's footballers have lost the first match of their winter preparations 2-0 (1-0) against Regionalliga club Eintracht Braunschweig. The match between BVB and BTSV was played on neutral ground in Bielefeld.

A real tested awaited Thomas Sulewski's team early on Saturday afternoon, but the coach was absent due to illness and had to be represented by his assistant Tim Treude in Bielefeld. In Eintracht Braunschweig, Borussia were testing themselves against an opponent from the German third tier.

However, a significant gulf in quality could hardly be observed across the 90 minutes. BVB were the more courageous side in the first period in particular and after an even start to the game, they found themselves narrowly in the ascendancy. But shortly before the break, it was the Eintracht women who took advantage of a passing error in Dortmund's build-up play to turn their only opportunity so far into the first goal of the day.

After the interval, the favourites from Lower Saxony then took control of the match slightly more clearly. But the Black & Yellows kept making highly promising inroads that could have led to something tangible if the attacks had been seen through to the end with slightly more purpose. The Braunschweig ladies were more efficient and scored with 10 minutes remaining to make it 2-0, which was the final score.

After the final whistle, however, Tim Treude was satisfied with the performance in the first friendly of the new year: "It was a decent friendly against a good opponent. We saw a lot of what we had set out to do. Everyone was committed and got stuck in. We would've liked to win the game, which would have been within the realms of possibility too if we had been more precise in the final third. We still have a bit of fine-tuning ahead of us, which we shall now proceed with."

The impact of this fine-tuning work, which will take place next week in training, will probably already been on show in the next friendly on Saturday. Then the BVB women will play host to the U17s of Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen at the BVB Evonik Football Academy (kick-off 14:30 CET). That will be followed by the next match of the mid-season preparations away to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen a day later (kick-off 15:00 CET).

BVB: Schröer – Becker (Gomulka, 46), Greulich (Kuhl, 65), Reinhardt, Kuhl (Tan, 46), Jung (Klemann, 65), Grothe (Kaul, 46), Rogge-Herper (Bedarf, 46), Klemann (Auffenberg, 46), Glänzer, Haslsteiner

Goals: 0-1 Wiedermann (41), 0-2 Lange (80)
