Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)

“Wirtz, what a player! One plus one again today.”

One goal and one assist that is.

Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper LukĂĄĆĄ HrĂĄdeckĂœ is always happy to offer a post-match quote and he hit the nail on the head after the team won three points on Sunday.

Wirtz is quickly becoming a star.

The German didn’t start in Leverkusen’s first two games of the season but has quickly convinced new boss Gerardo Seoane that he has to be on the pitch at all times. Leverkusen picked up a first half red card at Stuttgart but Wirtz, still just 18, wasn’t the player sacrificed, so important he has quickly become.

Lining up behind Patrik Schick, Wirtz was constantly busy, with his typical tenacity off the ball and drive on it.

He superbly assisted Leverkusen’s second goal, before the red card, flicking a loose ball over Marc-Oliver Kempf before sprinting away to the byline and picking out Patrik Schick in the middle for a tap-in.

The red card changed the game, which Leverkusen had looked ready to run away with, but Wirtz dug in, playing as the most advanced player after injury forced Schick off.

It worked a treat.

The teenager’s ability to hold onto the ball and attract defenders saw him combine with Moussa Diaby to offer an enormous threat on the break. Wirtz released Diaby in behind the defence and the Frenchman was unlucky not to restore the two-goal lead.

So Wirtz did it himself. Having already come close to a belting effort, Wirtz snatched possession smartly and raced away with 20 minutes remaining, keeping his cool after a 40-yard sprint to find the bottom corner with his weaker left foot.

Job done.
