Sébastien Haller (Borussia Dortmund)

The wait for Bundesliga to return has lasted two months. Sébastien Haller has had to wait six for his Borussia Dortmund debut.

But that wait is over and, having gone through a battle with testicular cancer, you can hardly tell he has been sidelined since the end of last season.

Two games in the space of a few days have brought two substitute appearances and a total of 56 minutes on the pitch. His Dortmund debut, at home against Augsburg, was a dramatic 4-3 win.

“It was a strong emotion,” he told L’Équipe this week.

“I had [my debut] in my line of sight from day one, to show my quality, in the knowledge that behind that there had been a fight. It added to my desire. We were all waiting for it.

“The only thing that lowered the intensity of the emotions was the scoreline, because I’m a competitor first and foremost and I came on at 2-2.”

Haller did not get involved in the goalscoring but looked sharp and strong combining with team-mates and could have sealed the victory with a tap-in had Giovanni Reyna only looked up and squared the ball late on.

On Wednesday, Haller was once again summoned from the bench with the scores level.

This time, against a stubborn Mainz side, he was less secure in possession but was also decisive in injury time, rising highest at a corner to nod the ball on towards the back post, where Reyna was arriving to net a dramatic winner.

German football is back. And so is Sébastien Haller.
