Bristol City signed Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea in August 2016 when the ace was just 18 years old and had only two Premier League appearances to his name.

The West London outfit loaned the striker to the Robins in the hope that he would develop as a player, and be given plenty of game time in senior football at Championship level - and so it proved.

Tammy Abraham starred for Bristol City in 2016/17

The Ashton Gate outfit - then managed by Lee Johnson - headed into the 2016/17 season with aspirations of finishing in a play-off spot, and Abraham was selected to be the man that could spearhead them to the top six.

The Englishman scored the sort of return which the Robins hoped for, with 23 goals and three assists in 41 Championship appearances, while he also scored three goals in four EFL Cup outings.

However, his goal-scoring exploits would not guide Johnson's side to the play-off positions, as the West Country men finished 17th in the Championship, just three points above the relegation zone.

But the value of Abraham's contributions at Ashton Gate was still massive for the Robins, as without the former Chelsea man's goals, they could have been relegated back to League One just two seasons after being promoted from the third tier.

Abraham became an instant hit among the Robins faithful, as he scored in his first start for the club as Johnson's side defeated Wycombe Wanderers away from home in the EFL Cup on August 9, 2016.

The striker would then go on to score a brace in the Championship just four days later, as City defeated Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.

During this clash with the Brewers, the then-Chelsea youngster proved his ability to deliver for his team when it mattered most, as he bagged the winner in the 90th minute, after Tom Naylor had equalised for the hosts in the 88th minute.

This tendency of Abraham's would be repeated in an EFL Cup trip to Scunthorpe United - then of League One - as he scored the winner in the seventh minute of extra time.

Furthermore, in the early stages of the 2016/17 Championship campaign, the prospect of the Robins landing a top six spot appeared plausible, and Abraham was a major contributing factor.

Johnson's men picked up an eye-catching 3-1 win over Aston Villa on August 27, while the Chelsea loanee was the star of the show as he scored a goal and made an assist.

The Ashton Gate outfit's good form would continue into September and early October 2016, as the club enjoyed three consecutive wins over Fulham, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.

Abraham was integral to this positive form, as he scored in the 4-0 win over Fulham, and provided both a goal and an assist for his side during the 2-1 victory over Forest.

But following these impressive wins, the form of Johnson's men would take a turn for the worse, as they won just one game in seven Championship attempts.

However, Abraham's form would not completely dry up, as he scored during a 2-2 draw with Barnsley - who would go on to finish 14th - on October 29.

The Robins endured a dismal winter during the 2016/17 season, and did not win a single league game from December 3 until February 4, 2017.

During this woeful spell, Abraham would remain on the scoresheet, scoring in defeats to Huddersfield Town, Wolves and Ipswich Town, while he also scored a brace in a 3-2 defeat to Reading.

The forward would go on to score in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Severnside rivals Cardiff City in mid-January 2017, while his goalscoring contributions would finally translate to points on the board for the Robins in draws with Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County in late January and early February respectively.

Abraham would finally be rewarded for his efforts as he scored in a 4-0 win over Huddersfield on March 17, while his red-hot form in April kept Johnson's men in the Championship.

Chelsea got what they wanted from Tammy Abraham loan move

Although the Robins did not go on the play-off hunt that they would have wanted to with Abraham on their side, the Blues reaped the benefits of allowing their starlet to go on loan to the Championship, while the striker himself had become a better player courtesy of this second tier spell.

After scoring 23 second tier goals during the 2016/17 season, a tally bettered only by Chris Wood - then of Leeds - Abraham returned to Stamford Bridge full of confidence.

His former parent club would then loan him out to Swansea City, where he would score five Premier League goals in 31 appearances and 15 starts in the 2017/18 campaign.

The experience Abraham gained at Ashton Gate shone through during his loan spell at Aston Villa during the 2018/19 season, as he scored 26 goals in 40 Championship outings, which helped the Midlands outfit land a top six spot, and they would go on to win the play-off final against Derby County at Wembley.

The ace then really proved his class by scoring 15 goals in 34 Premier League appearances during the 2019/20 campaign for Chelsea, in his first full season as a first team player at Stamford Bridge.

Abraham went on to be sold to AS Roma for £34 million in 2021, and you can quite comfortably say that Bristol City gave him that first real platform to make that kind of move for that transfer fee possible.
