That’s the positive side of things at Celtic. In contrast the summer transfer window fiasco and the internal strifes that are emerging – or is that re-emerging – shows that there is a shadow hanging over Celtic at the start of this season and it’s only going to get worse the longer the Celtic board fail to secure the quality additions the squad is crying out for – two wingers, a centre-forward and possibly a back-up left back.

Rodgers hints at his own frustrations

Asked about this after Celtic’s comfortable 2-0 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie yesterday afternoon Brendan Rodgers gave a revealing answer, one that possibly hints at his own frustrations not only at the inaction of the board but the lack of backing he’s had from the support who still seem reluctant to chant the manager’s name.

Rodgers may well feel that he’s done enough to merit this show of solidarity and maybe within it all, the actual reasons why he left in February 2019 the way he did, is perhaps being revealed in plain sight for all those watching closely enough.

“There’ll always be a narrative around it, you know,” Brendan said. “I read something the other day about the two years I was here, we don’t play good football, don’t play this, don’t play that. We’ve never played that in the last two years.

“So, I think there’s a number of people that really don’t like me here at Celtic. But with me and looking at the team, I’m really happy to see how the players are, the current players that we have,” Brendan Rodgers said.

“Two clean sheets, controlled a difficult game, showed a resilience last week to break through, and we’re ticking along nicely.

“And as we know what will make the football always smile a wee bit more and a bit more creative is the level of player. So but hopefully we can do that and then we’ll be hopefully be, by the end of the month, in a really good place,” the Celtic manager said.

Brendan Rodgers has said he is happy at Celtic and provided the club show ambition in the transfer market he wants to stay. I was there when he made that point clearly a week last Friday. If he gets his way Celtic supporters can look forward with real optimism for the season ahead. If not, and even if we reach the Champions League, nothing much can reasonably be expected there with the squad as it currently stands.

Kyogo was sold six months ago and has not been replaced. Adam Idah has shown himself to be an effective striker when coming off the bench but in contrast fails to make a similar impact when starting.

Celtic had plenty of notice that Kyogo and Kuhn wanted to leave

Celtic knew that Nicolas Kuhn wanted to move on in January and they were happy enough to collect £17m for him early in the summer window without sourcing a ready-made replacement. Their antics at submitting lowball bids has seen club bosses openly ridiculing their behaviour.

Yesterday Brendan Rodgers made a point about his critics and perhaps he was also noting that as the figurehead battling for ambition over hoarding he deserves a little more support personally from the Celtic support. Rodgers was justified in calling time on his time at Celtic the first time around but the manner in which he left was a huge error, one that brought in £7.5m in compensation from Leicester City.

He came back to right the wrong, correct his own mistake, repair his own legacy at the club he supports. He said he’d do that over three years and also made it clear in that explosive media conference that he will be away next summer after his three years are up if there’s no ambition in the Celtic boardroom to take Celtic forward.

Champions League draw

The Champions League draw as just about as kind as it could have been last season for the group stages. This time – if we get there – it might go the other way and Celtic with a weakened squad – could be in for some really difficult nights.

Brendan Rodgers will do his best but will know he was not given the tools to do the job. That’s why he’ll go in May 2025 and his replacement will not be an ambitious appointment.
