Manchester United to take on Young Boys at Old Trafford in the UEFA Champions League

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have discovered that their UEFA Champions League tie against Young Boys will go ahead at Old Trafford as originally planned.

The game ran the risk of being relocated to a neutral venue after the Omricon variant of Covid-19 saw a list of new measures introduced in Europe.

The Swiss government has imposed a 10-day quarantine on those travelling from certain countries, including the United Kingdom. This would have put Young Boys in a sticky situation ahead of their trip to Manchester.

And that could have ended up with the game going ahead elsewhere at a neutral venue. The same approach was adopted in the latter stages of the 2019/20 and the 2020/21 competitions.

Thankfully the Swiss Super League side has now confirmed that they have given Young Boys an exemption and will be able to play the game at the Theatre of Dreams. It could very well prove to be Ralf Rangnick’s first European game in charge of the club.

Not only it is a good piece of news for Man United but also Young Boys. Being in quarantine would have put their games against Sion (December 12) and Basel (December 15) in jeopardy. More so, they would also have had to take on Lugano without time for preparation.

Man United have won three of their first five UEFA Champions League games this season and have guaranteed their spot in the last 16 of the tournament. While a defeat will not be the end of the world, it is imperative that we go all out and look to keep a good run of form going.

With an electric fanbase to cheer them on, Rangnick and co could put on a real show that could be a sign of things to come.

Old Trafford has had little reason to cheer in recent weeks. With a new era now set to begin, the arena can do its part in helping Rangnick’s Red Devils on. And we would especially need that support against Young Boys on the last matchday.

Despite a bad start to our European campaign, it is admirable how we fought to assume control of the group under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. We have come too far to not qualify now, and a repeat of the 2019/20 season where RB Leipzig knocked us out on gameweek 6 is the last thing we need.
